In December 2024, the Somali Cardiac Society participated as an active stakeholder in the adaptation of the World Health Organization’s Package of Essential Noncommunicable Disease Interventions for Primary Health Care in Humanitarian Settings (PEN-H) to the Somali context.
The process brought together relevant stakeholders to consider how essential services for noncommunicable diseases, particularly hypertension and other cardiovascular conditions, could be strengthened and delivered effectively within Somalia’s primary healthcare system and humanitarian settings.
The Somali Cardiac Society contributed its cardiovascular expertise to the discussions, with particular emphasis on improving the prevention, early detection and management of hypertension.
The consultation also helped build momentum toward the development of Somalia’s National Hypertension Guideline, aimed at providing healthcare professionals with a practical and standardized approach to hypertension care across different levels of the health system.
Through participation in initiatives such as PEN-H, the Somali Cardiac Society continues to support stronger cardiovascular services, evidence-based clinical practice and collaboration with national and international health partners.
